WITHNESS HISTORY
One of the railway station that has a historic significance in the struggle for indonesia’s independence is Stasiun Tugu Yogyakarta or which is now called Stasiun Besar Tugu Yogyakarta. When we first set foot on this station, our thoughts will drift like brought back to the past, to the dutch colonial era. Maybe that’s because the building is a heritage station dutch. Stasiun Tugu became one of history witness struggle of Indonesia, provides detailed trace through the building, from exterior up to the interior of the station that combine with the busy traffic on the railway station. It began serving the transportation needs since 2 may 1887, about 15 years after the Stasiun lempuyangan.

Stasiun Tugu originally used only for transport agricultural produce from areas in Java, Sumatera, Kalimantan and Sulawesi. But since 1 february 1905 the station began to be used for transit passenger. Track railways to the outside of the city was first built in 1899 that connects Yogyakarta with Surakarta. Because it built in dutch colonial period, the architecture of these stations was very thick with european nuances. Once of the train, you will recognize from the door of large brown door, and the high of structure and enhanced with white walls. Visitors can also enjoy the charm of the station building which until now still maintained it’s originality from the front.

Looks magnificent building with a large door and two roof for railroad. Stasiun Tugu is one of the big stations that still retain its function as a place for train treatment. This station is different from the big one in general, that it’s function only as a transit. In this station’s area you can wander to the corner, to be able to watch the activities of the mortar carriages and decay trace train station. Some employees at this station is also known the history of the station so we can talk and take some information from them . When headed to the western part of the station, we will meet the train locomotive repair. Visitors will be amazed here, because it can be look in detail each component in the locomotive. You even can watch the engine from below, because there is a ladder to the bottom of a parked locomotive. Not far from this place, you could see the ancient statue of a black train, this is also interesting too. Just need a little walk to the south and you can see where improvements train carriages. Although visitors can not enter, from the fence can be peeked at the white-blue iron fence that surrounds. Looked up to see a train parts placed in the yellow tower. Parts that are the crane carriage connector has been used since the dutch era. You have to walk back to the north and seen janitors cart. Stasiun Tugu location is also still, at least at the location of the position. But it certainly has changed the construction of the building, though not total. Originated from a small station, that station has now become one of the largest stations in Indonesia which has 6 tracks.
While jakarta is not safe anymore for young leaders of the new republic was proclaimed. Japan had surrendered and the dutch master tried again former colonies. NICA troops continue to terrorize the residence of president Sukarno and vice president Mohammad Hatta. For safety, the two leaders of the nation was forced to move from one place to the other place. Finally on 3 january 1946 at about 7 p.m, Sukarno and Hatta left Jakarta and go to Yogyakarta. Along the way, the two leaders welcomed by the people. Finally on the morning of 4 january 1946 at 9, KBL arrived at the Stasiun Tugu Yogyakarta, where the sultan hamengkubuwono waited for. After that, Sukarno speech over the radio, which announced to the world community that from henceforth the government of Indonesia has moved to Yogyakarta. And Yogyakarta will become the capital of Indonesia for 4 year.
